CRPF upgrades to face challenges in Kashmir

SRINAGAR - Hatred-propelled stones, or HPS, are a favorite weapon of protestors in Kashmir. They are cheap, easy to use and deadly. HPS have claimed many heads and limbs of CRPF personnel, especially in Srinagar, Sopore and Baramullah.

The most recent HPS incident occured in the Nowhatta area of Srinagar where Ramu Bihari recieved critical injuries. “They were in Nowhatta, when his police van was hit with a HPS,” says Ramu’s mother, Gunjan in a sad and worried tone. “Ramu Babua never knew what hit him.

The CRPF shun bullet proof gear and crummy AK-47's by replacing it with third generation stone proof gear and laser guided slingshots, which however didn't prove to be efficient against the HPS. Eleven months ago, CRPF commanders in Srinagar began asking the Central Govt. for a new system to counter HPS and other anti-gypsy weapons.
