“India ko kya chahayay”, “What does India need”, announces Deepika Pudukone, Bollywood’s leading actress in an advertisement for a mobile phone brand, “lightning fast cash, lightning fast transport and lightning fast mobile”.
Leave aside Lightning fast, prepaid mobile phones will soon blocked in Kashmir. Prepaid now, post-paid later, internet then, are we living in such a repressive regime. Even China or even Iran, considered the most repressive regimes don’t ban mobile phones, they just block a website or two, arrest some bloggers and rough them up. Even during last year’s summer intifada SMS (short message service) and cable TV were banned for couple of months, but were restored later. But this time the things don’t look to be restored in a short period of time. Instead of banning altogether the Government decided to give a slow death to the mobile, by ending January every prepaid mobile would be blocked. Pre-paid now, post paid later, then internet, cable TV and slowly every means of communication would be blocked.
