The axe of the tax has fallen on the paid pelters with the government deciding to levy income tax on them. The decision was taken after the government failed to keep a check on stone pelting. Soon you may see the paid pelters queuing up before the Income Tax office. This descision has infuriated the paid pelter, “We are paid just Rs. 150 per day and that too not regularly”, they argued, “Our working season is very short, and we hardly get 4 months working period, add to it the Government enforces strict curfew which badly affects our business”, the President of All Paid Pelters Association of Jammu and Kashmir (Hawala Chapter) told Timez of Kashmir. He further argued that their yearly income is much below the taxable income of the common citizens, a point he points out that can prove crucial if the association decides to take the course of law. “Our legal expert team is looking into the matter and we will soon come up with a future course of action”, he added. One agitated pelter, having a strong knowledge of history commented “During Maharajah’s time prostitutes had to pay tax and it contributed to almost 25% of total income of the Government, but the times have changed”, adding he didn’t compared pelters with prostitutes. Almost all the peters were unhappy with the callous approach towards them, “ Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had, on the floor of the house said, that his will take every step necessary to rehabilitate the pelters, but noting concrete has been done”, the President quizzed. “Ours is the most risky job, there is a threat to life everyday, we appeal the Chief Minister to take the necessary steps required”
